Tiv Leaders Raise Alarm Over Fresh Taraba Threats

The President General of the Tiv Cultural and Social Association, James Chihi Bakah, and the Forum of Tiv Political Appointees have raised alarm over new security concerns in Taraba State, warning of threats circulating online that suggest possible attacks on several communities.

They spoke on Thursday, the 26th of March, 2026, in Jalingo, where they addressed journalists on the situation in Tiv areas of Southern Taraba. While acknowledging recent improvements, they pointed to reports indicating that attackers may be regrouping to target communities such as Ananum, Tor-Damisa, Peva, and Kofai Amadu in Donga and Takum local government areas.

Bakah said Tiv residents had welcomed the intervention of the Taraba State Government led by Governor Agbu Kefas, noting that the deployment of security personnel had started to restore calm in areas that were previously volatile.

According to him, the presence of security forces has halted further attacks and boosted confidence among residents who had been living in fear for months.
“Some areas that were previously tense are now experiencing relative calm,” he said.

The group also commended Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as the armed forces, including the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Air Force, for responding swiftly to reported threats in Tiv communities, adding that the action helped avert a wider crisis.

Bakah noted that without the timely intervention of the state government and security agencies, the situation could have worsened, drawing parallels with past incidents in parts of Benue State and Kwara State.

Despite the progress recorded, the Tiv leaders called for sustained and possibly increased security presence in communities such as New Gboko Demevaa, Adu, and Gbundu to prevent a return to violence.

They also appreciated Governor Kefas for providing relief materials to displaced persons in Donga, Abako, and Chanchanji, describing the effort as responsive to the needs of affected residents.

Raising further concern over the reported threats circulating online, the group urged authorities to maintain ongoing security operations to forestall any attacks, especially as the farming season approaches.

They stressed the need for cooperation between residents and security agencies, encouraging locals to share timely information that could help maintain peace.

The Tiv leaders also restated their commitment to peace and development, pledging continued support for the state government while calling for joint efforts to secure lasting stability in the area.
