A horrific road accident along the Jos–Bauchi Road in Plateau State has claimed the lives of 10 people and left several others injured in what authorities describe as a preventable tragedy.
The crash occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday, around 12:12 a.m., near a military checkpoint on the outskirts of Jos, involving two trailers and two Ford Galaxy minibuses.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as devastating, with vehicles mangled and victims trapped at the site.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), 19 people were involved in the incident — 17 men and two women.
Ten adult men were pronounced dead on the spot, while the injured were swiftly transported to General Hospital, Miango, Jos University Teaching Hospital, and Plateau State Specialist Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Eight of the deceased were taken to hospital morgues, while two bodies were claimed by officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers for burial arrangements.
The FRSC confirmed that the rescue operation was a collaborative effort involving their personnel, the Nigerian Police, the Nigerian Military, and local villagers.
Preliminary investigations point to reckless driving and excessive speed as the primary causes of the crash.

FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander Olajide Mogaji, expressed deep concern over the incident, noting the alarming pattern of fatal road accidents in the state. “This tragedy occurred barely 12 days after eight University of Jos students lost their lives in a similar accident,” he said.
Commander Mogaji urged motorists to avoid night driving, excessive speeding, and operating vehicles under fatigue or while unwell. He also reminded the public to report accidents and emergencies via the FRSC toll-free number 122.
Tuesday’s crash marks the second major road disaster in Plateau State within two weeks, highlighting ongoing concerns over road safety and enforcement along major highways.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident fully as the state mourns the loss of lives in the early hours of what was meant to be a quiet morning journey.
