Troops of Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE have neutralised a suspected bandit and recovered weapons, ammunition and other items during a fighting patrol along the Gbise–Igyudu Road in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
The operation, conducted by troops of Sector 1 on September 2, 2026, was part of sustained military efforts to disrupt the activities of criminal elements and prevent attacks on communities across the Joint Operations Area.
According to a statement shared on the Nigerian Army’s Facebook page on Thursday, the troops encountered two suspected bandits riding on a motorcycle while conducting a routine fighting patrol along the Gbise–Igyudu axis.
Following the identification of the armed suspects, the troops engaged them, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
The military disclosed that one of the suspected bandits was neutralised during the encounter, while the second reportedly fled the scene.
The operation yielded a cache of weapons and ammunition allegedly abandoned by the suspects.
Recovered items included one pistol, one pistol magazine, one AK-47 magazine, eight rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition, one 7.62mm NATO round, two rounds of 9mm ammunition and one PKT round.
Troops also recovered a Tecno mobile phone and assorted charms from the scene.
The army said the recovery is expected to provide additional leads to ongoing efforts to identify the fleeing suspect and establish the wider network and activities of the criminal group operating within the area.

It stressed that accurate information from communities remains critical to enabling security forces to respond swiftly to emerging threats and prevent attacks.
Operation WHIRL STROKE reaffirmed its commitment to dominating its operational areas through sustained patrols and intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and restoring peace and security to affected communities.
The military said troops would continue to maintain pressure on bandits and other criminal elements while strengthening security around vulnerable communities and major routes within its area of responsibility.
