Troops of Sector 3 under the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, have successfully repelled an attempted infiltration by insurgents at a military position in Monguno, Borno State, though the encounter ended in tragedy following a deadly Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion.
The incident, which occurred late on April 12, 2026, at a location identified as Charlie 13, underscores the persistent dangers faced by military personnel operating in the region.
According to the Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, troops came under an isolated attack when insurgents attempted to breach the defensive position.
A fierce exchange of gunfire ensued, with soldiers ultimately overpowering the attackers and forcing them to retreat.
Despite securing the area, tragedy struck shortly after the engagement.
The Commanding Officer, who was reportedly advancing toward the frontline to assess the situation and boost troop morale, encountered an IED. The explosion destroyed his vehicle, killing him and six other personnel.

Military authorities described the late officer as a courageous and committed leader who exemplified selfless service.
His decision to move closer to the frontline, despite the risks, was said to reflect exceptional bravery and dedication to duty.
The Joint Task Force expressed deep sorrow over the loss, extending condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers while reaffirming its resolve to sustain ongoing operations in the North-East.
The incident highlights the continued threat posed by insurgents in the region, particularly the use of IEDs, which remain a significant danger even after active combat engagements have ended.
Security analysts note that while recent operations have recorded tactical successes against insurgent groups, the evolving nature of the threat requires sustained vigilance, improved counter-IED strategies, and enhanced intelligence gathering to protect troops and civilians alike.
