Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi has been confirmed as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University.
The confirmation was contained in a statement issued on Friday, the 7th of November, 2025, by the acting Head of Information of the institution, Dr Habib Yakoob.
According to the statement, the ratification was reached at the 80th Extraordinary Meeting of the university’s Governing Council.
“The appointment takes effect from Tuesday, 10 February 2026 and is for a non-renewable tenure of five years,” Yakoob said.

The decision finally ends months of interim leadership under a series of acting Vice Chancellors, a situation caused by controversies that followed the appointment of the former VC, Prof. Aisha Maikudi.
Fawehinmi currently serves as the Vice Chancellor of the Nigerian British University.
