Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed his confidence that the nation of Nigeria possesses the capacity to surmount its persistent security difficulties.
This optimism, he suggested, is achievable through a dedicated combination of collaborative efforts, good governance, and reforms specifically aimed at empowering state and local government structures to participate more actively in the country’s development framework.
The Governor’s insightful comments were delivered on Tuesday, the 11th of November, 2025, in Kaduna during a special lecture convened to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
The high-profile gathering was organized by the Arewa Think Tank and featured a notable attendance of dignitaries, including former governors, ministers, influential traditional leaders, esteemed academics, and various development experts.
Addressing the central topic of the event, which was “National Security, Unity and Development,” Governor Sanwo-Olu asserted that effectively tackling widespread issues like insecurity, poverty, and hunger fundamentally necessitates the implementation of several key strategies. These include the establishment of effective local policing, comprehensive economic reforms, and targeted infrastructure projects designed to forge stronger links between rural and urban communities.
In his speech, the Governor strongly advocated for a shift toward decentralised governance and the granting of greater grassroots autonomy, presenting these as vital and indispensable steps on the path toward achieving enduring national stability and unity.
He underscored his point by stating clearly: “The time has come for Nigeria to embrace state-driven innovation and accountability. We must strengthen local governance and ensure that every Nigerian feels the benefits of democracy.”

Reinforcing his belief in the country’s future, Governor Sanwo-Olu added, “Together, we will overcome poverty, hunger, and, as President Bola Tinubu has assured, terrorism.”
Praising Diversity and Renewed Hope Agenda
Governor Sanwo-Olu lauded Nigeria’s vast and varied diversity, characterizing it not as a source of conflict but as an inherent source of strength deeply rooted in the nation’s rich cultural and religious pluralism.
He urged the current generation of leaders to find inspiration in the foundational vision established by the country’s founding fathers, emphasizing that both unity and reform remain absolutely essential prerequisites for continued progress.
Furthermore, he commended President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly for its focus on increasing allocations to states and local governments, reforming tax policies, and its drive to enhance financial autonomy for local authorities. These national initiatives, he noted, naturally complement Lagos State’s own strategic development plan, the THEMES+ agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure, human capital development, inclusion, and sustainable growth.
Concluding his address, the Governor passionately implored all Nigerians to embrace unity as the nation’s single greatest asset, stressing the powerful message: “Our diversity is not a weakness but a strength. With collective will, Nigeria will overcome insecurity and all challenges that lie ahead.”
