Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its military response to terrorism and other security challenges are receiving further support from the United States through an expanded defence partnership involving the planned acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper helicopters.
The United States Mission in Nigeria announced the development on Tuesday, September 29, in a post on its official X account, linking the proposed acquisition to the broader security relationship between Abuja and Washington.
The Mission said the cooperation reflects the shared interest of both countries in improving regional security and preparing Nigeria to respond to changing threats.
The post reads, “U.S.-Nigeria security cooperation continues to advance our shared efforts to strengthen regional security.
“The planned acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper helicopters underscores both countries’ commitment to building Nigeria’s defence capabilities and addressing current and emerging threats together.”
Washington also reiterated its commitment to maintaining its security relationship with Nigeria, particularly in efforts aimed at promoting stability within the region.
“The United States values continued cooperation with Nigeria in support of peace, security, and stability,” the post added.

The Viper helicopters are expected to add to Nigeria’s existing military capabilities as the country continues to confront terrorism, insurgency and other forms of insecurity.
The proposed purchase is part of a wider defence relationship between Nigeria and the United States, which has included military hardware, training and programmes covering counterterrorism, maritime security, border protection and military professionalisation.
The relationship also involves defence trade and efforts to improve interoperability between the Nigerian military and its US and other Western counterparts.
The US State Department approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to Nigeria in April 2022 involving 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters and associated equipment. The estimated value of the package was $997 million.
The proposed package included 28 T700-GE-401C engines, 2,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System guidance sections, logistics support and training.
At the time, the US government said the proposed sale would strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to support shared security objectives, promote regional stability and enhance interoperability with the United States and other Western partners.
The Viper deal follows previous American military assistance to Nigeria, including the 2017 sale of 12 A-29 Super Tucano aircraft valued at $497 million.
According to the US State Department, Nigeria made its first payment for the 12 AH-1Z helicopters in August 2023.
