Wanted Anambra Teacher Surrenders Over 12-Year-Old Pupil’s Death

A teacher accused of causing the death of a 12-year-old pupil in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State has surrendered to the police.

The suspect, Mrs. Dim Ebere, 47, turned herself in at the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters on Saturday, July 18, 2026, days after security operatives launched a search for her.

The Anambra State Police Command said she is currently in custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for further investigation.

Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the surrender followed sustained operations by the Command’s Safe School Protection Squad in collaboration with officers of the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters, community leaders and other stakeholders.

The command commended the Adazi-Ani community and traditional institution for their cooperation, while assuring the deceased pupil’s family and the public that justice would be pursued.

Residents were urged to remain calm, avoid taking the law into their own hands and support the ongoing investigation with useful information.

The development came a day after police announced a manhunt for the teacher following the death of the pupil.

Police said officers responded to the incident on Thursday, July 16, 2026, after receiving a report that the child allegedly died after being flogged at a school in Adazi-Ani.

The pupil was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment. His remains were deposited in a morgue for preservation and autopsy, while preliminary findings revealed visible injuries on parts of his body.

The incident has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for stricter measures against excessive corporal punishment in schools.

The police said investigations are ongoing and further action will be taken based on the outcome of the probe.
