The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday pledged to work closely with the six newly elected Area Council chairmen, assuring that political differences would not hinder development in the capital.
Wike made the assurance when the council leaders visited his office in Abuja to collect their certificates of return ahead of their June swearing-in. He described the expected cooperation between his administration and the incoming council officials as a “rainbow coalition.”
“Congratulations to all the newly elected chairmen. You have earned this opportunity through hard work, and we are grateful for the chance to serve alongside you,” Wike said.
The minister emphasised that effective governance requires collaboration across party lines, noting that the FCT Administration has consistently engaged stakeholders regardless of political affiliation. “No matter the party, what is important is that we work together. Since I came as minister, we have always worked together in the city, and that is why we have continued to achieve results,” he said.
Wike acknowledged that candidates aligned with President Bola Tinubu received government support during the elections, but assured that officials from other parties with shared goals would also contribute to the administration’s plans. “Candidates who supported Mr President received our support, and we thank God they emerged victorious. Even those from other parties who support the President will be part of what we call a rainbow coalition in the FCT,” he said.

The minister urged the incoming chairmen to prepare for their new roles, promising the administration’s cooperation once they assume office. He also commended outgoing council leaders and wished them well in their future endeavours.
“By the time you are sworn in, we will begin to work together to move the councils forward. The support given to you by Mr President means you must reciprocate by giving good governance to the people,” Wike added.
In the February 21 elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) won five of the six Area Council chairmanship seats, securing victories in Abuja Municipal Area Council, Abaji, Bwari, Kwali, and Kuje, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in Gwagwalada.
