The Yauri Rigata cultural festival, one of Nigeria’s longest-running and most celebrated marine events, has been cancelled for 2026.
The festival, originally scheduled for Wednesday, February 4 to Saturday, February 7, was officially called off on Sunday, February 1.
Mu’azu Mohammed, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Galadiman Yauri, and Secretary to the Government of Kebbi State, explained that the cancellation was necessary to address safety concerns and allow for major infrastructure upgrades.

He said the works are aimed at ensuring the festival’s long-term sustainability and continued success.
“Rigata,” a Gunganci term used by the Gungawa people of Yauri, translates as “Marine War.”
The festival holds both cultural and economic significance, serving as a marine showcase while also highlighting the agricultural activities of the Gungawa, who have lived along the islands and banks of the River Niger for more than 500 years.
