A zookeeper was fatally mauled by a leopard in the early hours of Friday August 1, 2025 at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo in a tragic incident that has shocked the city and raised urgent questions about enclosure safety.
The victim, Uriel Nuri, 36, was conducting routine work inside a secure area of the leopard enclosure when the animal escaped and attacked. According to official statements from zoo management and emergency services, the incident occurred shortly before 10:00 a.m. as the zoo prepared for a behind-the-scenes tour.
Nuri was found with severe neck injuries and in critical condition. Paramedics initiated CPR and emergency medical procedures on-site before transferring him to Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
The zoo confirmed that the leopard entered a service area not visible to the public. At no point were visitors in danger, as the public viewing sections are separated by glass barriers. The leopard was later safely contained.
Zoo officials expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced a temporary closure of the facility to allow for a thorough internal investigation and safety audit. “We are devastated by the loss of our dear colleague,” the zoo said in a statement. “Uriel was a dedicated and beloved member of our team.”

Police have opened a formal inquiry into how the animal accessed the area where Nuri was working. Early reports suggest the enclosure’s internal security gates may not have fully latched, though this remains under investigation.
The Biblical Zoo, known for housing species mentioned in the Bible and endangered animals, has not experienced a fatal animal incident of this nature in recent years. The zoo has pledged to cooperate fully with investigators and to implement any recommended changes to prevent a recurrence.
Authorities have asked the public to refrain from speculation while the facts are still being established.
