Lagos Authorities Shut Down NITEL Building Over Sewage Violations

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), in a joint operation with Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), on Friday, February 20, 2026, sealed the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) building on Marcathy Street, Obalende, Lagos Island for discharging untreated sewage into public drains.

Authorities said investigations revealed that occupants of the largely abandoned property were releasing raw wastewater into drainage systems, causing environmental pollution and posing health risks to residents.

Local communities had complained of persistent foul odours and visible waste entering public drains in the days preceding the closure.

Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, described the discharge as a violation of Lagos State sanitation laws, warning of the heightened risk of water-borne diseases such as cholera.

He said the enforcement formed part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to protect public health and uphold environmental standards.

Wahab urged property owners and tenants across Lagos to comply with wastewater regulations, cautioning that future violations would attract strict penalties, including prosecution.

The sealing of the NITEL building is part of broader enforcement operations targeting illegal sewage disposal across Lagos to safeguard public health and the environment.
