The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, has officially welcomed former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and his supporters into the party, describing the move as a notable development for Nigeria’s democratic space.
Kwankwaso was received during a well-attended ceremony held on Monday at his Miller Road residence, with prominent figures of the party present.
Addressing attendees, Mark said the defection of Kwankwaso, along with what he described as “millions of supporters,” reflects a conscious effort by opposition leaders to come together and reinforce democratic engagement across the country.
He noted that the development represents a unified response to growing public demand for a stronger and more coordinated opposition capable of protecting Nigeria’s democratic framework.
Mark also took a swipe at the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of actions that could undermine multiparty democracy.

He warned against tendencies he claimed were aimed at stifling opposition and centralising power.
According to him, the expanding coalition within the ADC demonstrates a firm resolve to preserve Nigerians’ ability to freely elect their leaders in a transparent and competitive environment.
“The future of Nigeria cannot be built through domination; it must be built through participation,” he stated, adding that leadership must be earned through public trust rather than control.
Describing the ADC as a platform for a broader national movement, Mark said the party is committed to promoting inclusiveness, accountability, and governance that prioritises the people.
He urged Nigerians, regardless of ethnic, religious, or political affiliations, to align with the party’s vision, emphasising the importance of unity in tackling the country’s challenges.
Mark further called on other political parties, civil society groups, and youth organisations to collaborate in building a strong coalition aimed at deepening democracy and enhancing governance.
He concluded that the current moment presents an opportunity for a shift in Nigeria’s political direction, encouraging citizens to embrace collective efforts in shaping the nation’s future.
