The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Felix Morka, has attributed the recent wave of defections from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party to what he described as the party’s deep internal crisis and inability to provide a credible political platform for its members.
Morka made the remarks on Monday during an appearance on The Morning Show while reacting to the growing number of politicians leaving the PDP for the ruling APC.
According to him, the PDP’s internal dysfunction has made it difficult for the party to function effectively as a viable opposition platform capable of supporting the political ambitions of its members.
“The PDP is no longer able to call itself a political party. The PDP is incapable, by its own internal dysfunction, of offering its members any sensible, credible, smart, actionable platform to pursue their political aspirations,” Morka said.
He added that the increasing defections to the APC should be interpreted as a vote of confidence in the ruling party rather than evidence that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state.
“When people decamp to the APC, it is an endorsement of the party. It is a statement that the APC is able to offer what the opposition cannot offer, and that is not our fault,” he stated.
Morka also dismissed concerns raised by some political observers that the country could be sliding into a one-party system, describing such claims as misleading and inconsistent with the realities of Nigeria’s democratic structure.

“When people suggest that the country is turning into a one-party state, that is utterly mischievous because it does not take into account the history and realities of a democratic society like we have in Nigeria,” he said.
Nigeria’s political landscape has experienced significant shifts since the 2023 general elections, with the once-dominant PDP facing internal divisions and leadership disputes that have weakened its influence in several states.
The ongoing instability within the opposition party has accelerated political realignments, with several high-profile figures and elected officials reportedly defecting to the APC in recent months.
Among the most notable is Dauda Lawal, whose reported defection strengthened the ruling party’s control at the state level.
Analysts say the trend underscores the fluid nature of Nigeria’s political alliances and highlights the challenges facing opposition parties as the country gradually moves toward the next electoral cycle.
