The family of former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretary, Sir Rex Onyeabo, has confirmed his death at the age of 80.
His son, Dr Obiora Onyeabo, issued a statement on Thursday, the 14th of August, 2025, in Enugu announcing the development.
He said the veteran politician died peacefully on the 7th of August.
“With heavy hearts but gratitude to God for a life well spent, the Onyeabo Family of Enugu State announces the passing of our Patriarch and Statesman, Chief (Sir) Rex Chuma Onyeabo (KSM).
“He is the Eze-Ugo 1 of Abuja Igbo Community, Onwa na-etili Ora 1 of Ugbawka, Ijele 1 na Akaegbe-Ugwu, and Ada-Idaha of Efik Kingdom.
“Chief Rex Onyeabo is a founding member of PDP and served as its National Secretary in 1999 as well as the PDP’s Board of Trustees until his death.

Sir Rex Onyeabo studied engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States before returning to Nigeria, where he devoted himself to public service.
He held key appointments at both federal and state levels, including deputy chairman of the governing board of the Federal Capital Development Authority and chairman of the governing council of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital.
Other roles included chairman of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, chairman of Nike Lake Resort Hotels in Enugu, and Permanent Secretary at the Enugu State Ministry of Works, Housing and Transport.
He also led the Local Government Services Commission and the Information and Culture portfolio, chaired the Institute of Directors in Abuja, and managed several successful companies.
A Knight of St. Mulumba, he was active in Catholic communities in both Abuja and Enugu.
