The Federal Government has approved Thursday, October 1, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the decision on Wednesday, September 30, in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians in the country and abroad as the nation marks another year of independence, urging citizens to make the anniversary an opportunity to promote unity, patriotism and peaceful coexistence.
He also called for greater tolerance and mutual respect among Nigerians, stressing that peace and stability remained essential to the country’s development.

The minister encouraged citizens to draw inspiration from the sacrifices and patriotism of Nigeria’s founding fathers by putting the nation’s collective interests above individual differences.
“As we celebrate 66th years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” he said.
According to the minister, the Federal Government remains focused on strengthening national security and improving public safety while creating conditions that allow Nigerians to live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.
Tunji-Ojo further reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to its Renewed Hope Agenda, saying the programme would continue to target improvements aimed at building a better Nigeria for its citizens.
He urged Nigerians to use the anniversary to renew their commitment to national unity, peaceful coexistence and the collective development of the country.
