Fubara’s Impeachment Hits Snag as Two More Rivers Lawmakers Withdraw Support

The impeachment effort targeting Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, has faced another setback as two additional lawmakers pulled back their backing.

Barile Nwakoh of Khana Constituency I and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II announced their decisions on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, just 48 hours after two other legislators had similarly withdrawn support.

Although both acknowledged that the Governor and his deputy may have breached constitutional provisions, they cited appeals from respected leaders and stakeholders for restraint and a peaceful resolution.

Nwakoh said the shift in stance “follows interventions aimed at promoting peace and stability in the state.”

With these latest withdrawals, four of the 26 lawmakers who initially endorsed the notice of alleged gross misconduct have now distanced themselves from the impeachment drive, signalling growing momentum within the Assembly for dialogue over confrontation.

The Rivers State House of Assembly is scheduled to reconvene plenary on January 15, 2026, with the House leadership under pressure to manage the widening divisions.

Earlier, Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo, representing Omuma Constituency, and Peter Abbey of Degema Constituency had announced their withdrawal from the process at a press briefing in Port Harcourt.

They urged colleagues to explore alternative methods for resolving the political impasse, warning that prolonged tension could further destabilise governance in the state.

The evolving scenario underscores the complexity of the impeachment process and reflects increasing calls for negotiation and compromise to preserve institutional stability.
