Gunmen Kill 11, Injure Two In Fresh Katsina Village Attack

No fewer than 11 residents have been confirmed dead following a renewed bandit assault on Gurbi Village in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, disclosed that the attack took place at about 2:40 p.m. when suspected armed bandits stormed the community and opened fire on residents.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, also left two persons injured, according to the state police spokes person.

He explained that the victims were shot before security operatives could arrive at the scene.

“The Katsina State Police Command regrets to inform the public of a bandits’ attack on Gurbi Village, Kankara LGA, which occurred at about 2:40 pm on April 26, 2026,” the statement read.

“Suspected bandits attacked the village and fatally shot 11 persons, while two others sustained varying degrees of injuries before the arrival of security agencies.”

Sadiq noted that a joint security team, comprising police officers, military personnel, and other agencies, swiftly responded after receiving a distress call.

According to him, the attackers fled upon sighting the advancing security operatives.

The police spokesperson added that calm has since been restored in the area, while the injured victims have been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

He further stated that the bodies of the deceased had been released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ali Umar Fage, has ordered the deployment of additional tactical teams to the affected community to prevent further attacks.

He also directed security commanders in the area to intensify patrols and strengthen intelligence gathering in collaboration with other agencies and local stakeholders.

The command extended its condolences to the bereaved families and assured residents that efforts were ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the attack.

Residents were urged to remain calm and provide useful information to security agencies to aid ongoing investigations.
