IGP Orders Review of Amnesty International Extrajudicial killings Claim on South-East

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed a comprehensive institutional review of Amnesty International report alleging extrajudicial killings and human rights violations by security agencies in Nigeria’s South-East region.

The 128-page document cited by First Daily correspondent on Saturday, titled “A Decade of Impunity: Attacks and Unlawful Killings in South-East Nigeria”, accuses the Nigeria Police Force and other security bodies of a pattern of abuses in the area.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Force spokesperson DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP said relevant departments and field formations had been tasked with a line-by-line assessment of the allegations.

The review will cross-check Amnesty’s claims against police operational records, intelligence reports, and field data from commands in the South-East.

While pledging to uphold citizens’ fundamental rights, the IGP noted that past Amnesty reports had sometimes contained inaccuracies and sweeping generalisations.

He said the ongoing review would therefore be fact-driven, evidence-based, and guided by institutional integrity.

“At the conclusion of the review, the Force will issue a detailed response addressing the specific issues raised in the report.

“This engagement will reflect our principled approach to constructive criticism and responsibility to protect public trust through verified information and contextual clarity,” the statement read.

The IGP reaffirmed the Police Force’s commitment to rights-based and accountable policing, stressing that reforms are underway to strengthen internal accountability, improve human rights training, and align policing practices with global standards.

He further emphasised the NPF’s openness to collaboration with civil society organisations, international partners, the National Human Rights Commission, and other stakeholders, urging all parties to approach security concerns with balance, accuracy, and objectivity.
