The Kano State House of Assembly has discontinued impeachment proceedings against former Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo following his resignation from office.
The decision was taken during plenary on Tuesday, April 7, as lawmakers reconvened after the Sallah recess, with Speaker Jibril Falgore presiding.
A statement issued by the Speaker’s spokesperson, Kamaluddeen Shawai, confirmed that the House halted the process after formally reading Gwarzo’s resignation letter.
The letter, dated March 27, 2026, stated that the former deputy governor stepped down voluntarily in accordance with Section 306(2) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
Part of the letter read, “I, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, Deputy Governor of Kano State, hereby tender my voluntary resignation from office, effective 27 March 2026.”
Speaking to journalists, Majority Leader Lawal Dala explained that the impeachment process became unnecessary following Gwarzo’s exit from office, adding that any allegations against him would now be handled by appropriate agencies.

“We are not the EFCC or ICPC; we discharge our responsibilities as a legislative body,” Dala said.
During the session, a lawmaker representing Kiru Constituency also announced his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the African Democratic Congress.
He said the move, which took effect on March 29, was influenced by consultations with constituents and internal challenges within the NNPP.
The Assembly further received the Local Government Audited Accounts for the year ended December 31, 2024.
Presenting the report, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Tukur Muhammad Fagge, commended lawmakers for their dedication throughout the review process.
