The Lagos State Government has reactivated its “Cash for Trash” initiative, encouraging residents to earn money while helping to keep the city clean and sustainable.
The recycling-for-cash programme, managed by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), allows residents to exchange recyclable waste such as plastics and cans for cash rewards.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement and video shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, said the initiative aims to promote environmental consciousness and reduce the effects of climate change.
“Did you know your trash can turn into cash? Our LAWMA Recycling Team is on the ground in Lagos Island, showing communities how to make it happen! We’re rewarding residents every Thursday for helping us keep Lagos clean and green. It’s a win for your wallet and a win for our city,” Wahab said.
The video posted by the commissioner showed officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) weighing bags of sorted recyclable items on portable scales and handing out cash rewards to residents who participated in the scheme.
According to Wahab, the government’s renewed focus on recycling is part of broader efforts to ensure a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Lagos.

The “Cash for Trash” project, which has been running for years, seeks to reduce the volume of waste ending up in landfills while promoting a culture of waste segregation and recycling across communities.
Residents are encouraged to take part by turning in their recyclables at designated collection points every Thursday across different parts of the state.
With this renewed push, the Lagos government hopes to strengthen public participation in environmental sustainability while offering financial incentives to those who contribute to keeping the city clean.
