Nigeria’s diplomatic community has been thrown into mourning following the death of ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who passed away at the age of 50 before formally assuming his posting.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Lele died in the early hours of Sunday, April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye, after a prolonged illness.
His death was officially announced in Abuja on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, with the ministry describing him as a disciplined, committed, and highly respected career diplomat whose service to Nigeria reflected quiet excellence and professionalism.
Lele had recently been appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, following Senate confirmation as part of a wider diplomatic reshuffle. He, however, passed away before taking up the assignment in Algiers.
Until his nomination, he served as Director of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he played a key role in managing Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements across the region.

Born in 1976 in Gamawa, Bauchi State, Lele studied Economics at Bayero University, Kano, before joining the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001.
Over more than two decades of service, he held postings in several international missions, including Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh, earning a reputation as a steady, detail-oriented officer with deep policy understanding.
Senior officials of the ministry received his remains in Abuja, where he was honoured as a hardworking diplomat whose contributions, though often understated, were valued within the foreign service structure.
He was laid to rest on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, in Kano in accordance with Islamic rites.
The ministry described his passing as a significant loss to Nigeria’s foreign service at a time of renewed efforts to strengthen the country’s diplomatic footprint globally.
Lele is survived by his family and leaves behind a career that ended just as he was set to ascend to ambassadorial rank.
