Nigeria’s Metering Rate Climbs to 56% as DisCos Step Up Installations — NERC

Nigeria’s push to close its electricity metering gap gained new momentum in October 2025, with the national metering rate rising to 56.07%, according to new data from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.

The figures, published in NERC’s latest Metering Factsheet and reviewed on Friday, show steady progress across the country’s 11 electricity distribution companies.

According to the commission, Nigeria recorded 12.03 million active electricity customers in September, with 6.66 million already metered.

An additional 80,943 meters were installed that month, nudging the national metering rate to 55.37%.

By October, the customer base inched up to 12.07 million, with 6.77 million customers metered.

NERC confirmed that 106,822 meters were installed in October alone—over 25,000 more than in September—pushing the national rate to 56.07%.

Across the DisCos, performance remained uneven. Aba Power posted one of the strongest improvements, jumping from 69.49% in September to 78.20% in October.

Eko Electricity Distribution Company and Ikeja Electric maintained their lead, each sustaining metering levels above 84%.

Abuja and Ibadan DisCos also recorded consistent gains, which NERC credited to more efficient rollout plans and smoother customer onboarding.

But several operators remain far behind. Enugu, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola DisCos—each with metering levels below 50%—continue to lag, despite ongoing installations.

NERC warned that these companies must ramp up deployment efforts to avoid widening their metering deficits.

The regulator noted that the publication of its Metering Factsheet is part of a broader transparency drive aimed at keeping consumers fully informed about reforms in the electricity market.

Earlier, NERC Vice Chairman Musiliu Oseni disclosed that between 600,000 and 700,000 electricity meters are currently available nationwide, urging DisCos to accelerate installations and strengthen communication with customers.
