Obi Hails Rare Lent–Ramadan Convergence, Urges National Renewal

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi on Wednesday described the simultaneous commencement of the Christian season of Lent and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan as a rare and symbolic moment for Nigeria, calling for national reflection, unity and renewal.

In a message shared via his official X account, Obi noted that February 18, 2026 marks an extraordinary spiritual convergence, with both sacred observances beginning on the same day — a coincidence he characterised as deeply significant for a nation grappling with insecurity and economic hardship.

“For the first time in many years, the Christian season of Lent and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan begin on the same day,” he wrote, describing the moment as “far more than a meeting of dates” but rather a symbol of shared sacrifice and collective hope.

Obi reflected on Nigeria’s vast human and natural resources, lamenting that the country has long been hindered by poor leadership.

He suggested that the dual observance — which he termed a “Double Fast” — offers an opportunity for Nigerians across faith lines to transcend divisions and rediscover their shared humanity.

Lent, observed by Christians, is traditionally marked by forty days of fasting, penance and prayer leading up to Easter, while Ramadan is a month-long period during which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, devote themselves to prayer and perform acts of charity.

According to Obi, the alignment of the two holy seasons should inspire intensified prayers for peace and stability, but also concrete action in addressing the nation’s challenges.

“Prayer alone is not enough; it must be paired with action,” he stated, urging Nigerians to embrace charity, forgiveness and self-discipline — virtues central to both faith traditions.

He expressed hope that the period would serve as a spiritual reset for the country, calling on citizens to allow their temporary hunger to heighten awareness of the suffering of others and to let their prayers become a shield over the nation.

Concluding his message, Obi extended goodwill to both Christian and Muslim faithful, wishing them “a Holy Lent and Ramadan Kareem,” and reiterating his belief that national transformation remains achievable.

“With our prayers and shared resolve, a New Nigeria is possible,” he affirmed.
