The Anambra State Police Command on Sunday dismissed social media reports alleging that the fire incident recorded along Udoji Road in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area, was the result of an armed attack.

In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, police clarified that the incident was caused by a fatal motor accident involving a petrol tanker, a Toyota Corolla, and a tricycle.

Ikenga said the clarification became necessary to dispel tension triggered by misinformation circulating online. According to him, the tanker, loaded with Premium Motor Spirit, collided with a Toyota Corolla in the early hours of November 21, leading to an explosion that destroyed both vehicles and several nearby shops.

“Regrettably, a tricycle within the area of impact was also engulfed by the fire, and the rider was fatally burned,” the statement said.

The command has launched an investigation to identify the drivers involved and determine further actions. Ikenga added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Orutugu, has ordered a probe to trace the social media account responsible for spreading the false report.

Residents said that the explosion caused a loud blast, severe burns to tricycle passengers, and widespread panic as the fire spread to adjoining shops. At least six shops were destroyed in the inferno.

Traffic was diverted by Federal Road Safety Corps officials as emergency workers battled the flames. The Head of Media and Publicity of the Anambra State Fire Service, Chukwudi Chiketa, confirmed that three fire trucks were deployed after a distress call, noting that one life was lost in the incident.

The police command urged members of the public to rely on verified information and warned against spreading panic through unverified online reports.
