Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have arrested two herders for alleged farmland trespass and crop destruction in Makurdi, Benue State, as part of heightened security measures to protect farmers during the peak of the harvest season.
According to a statement signed by Lt. Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu of the Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke on Tuesday night, and shared on the Nigerian Army’s Facebook page on Wednesday, the incident occurred on 20 November 2025 during a routine farm protection patrol by OPWS personnel deployed at Zongo Akiki.
First Daily correspondent learnt that the troops intercepted the herders after they reportedly led their cattle into cultivated community farmlands, resulting in damage to crops belonging to local residents.
The timely intervention of the troops is said to have prevented further destruction and a potential clash between the herders and affected farmers.
The suspects were taken into custody for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Force Commander OPWS, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their professionalism and urged communities to avoid taking the law into their own hands when faced with disputes.

He warned that retaliatory actions only escalate tensions and undermine peaceful coexistence.
Major General Gara further called on herders to be law-abiding and desist from acts that threaten public safety and stability.
He reaffirmed the commitment of Operation Whirl Stroke to securing farmlands and ensuring a safe environment for lawful farming and other legitimate activities.
