Nigeria’s Super Falcons have crashed out of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon on Sunday, August 9, 2026.
The Indomitable Lionesses’ victory at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca sent them into the semi-finals and secured an automatic place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The result ended Nigeria’s bid to retain the title they won by beating Morocco 3-2 in the 2024 WAFCON final, played in July 2025 after the tournament was postponed.

The Super Falcons reached the quarter-finals as Group C runners-up, recovering from an opening loss to Malawi with victories over Zambia and Egypt. Cameroon topped Group D to set up the last-eight clash.
Nigeria’s defeat ends their chance of direct World Cup qualification through the semi-finals, but their hopes of reaching Brazil 2027 remain alive through the additional African qualification route available to the quarter-final losers.
The outcome also reverses a familiar pattern in the rivalry. Nigeria had eliminated Cameroon in the 2018 semi-finals and 2022 quarter-finals before the Indomitable Lionesses claimed victory in Casablanca.
The Super Falcons must now navigate the additional qualification pathway to preserve their record of appearing at every FIFA Women’s World Cup since the inaugural edition in 1991.
