President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured elder statesman and nationalist, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, as he marks his 100th birthday, describing him as “the last man standing” among Nigeria’s early freedom fighters.
In a heartfelt tribute personally signed by the President, Tinubu celebrated Yakasai’s extraordinary life of activism, patriotism and unwavering commitment to national unity. He praised the Kano-born political icon as a man who “exemplifies a purposeful life” and whose century-long journey reflects courage, sacrifice and service.
Tinubu recounted Yakasai’s role in the struggle for Nigeria’s independence, noting how the injustice of colonial rule propelled the young Yakasai into political activism. As a member of the radical Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) led by Mallam Aminu Kano, Yakasai joined efforts to mobilise Northern Nigerians in the fight for liberation.
“Through NEPU, Yakasai and his co-travellers ignited the fire for the Independence struggle,” the President wrote.
Beyond independence, Tinubu highlighted Yakasai’s enduring influence in national development. The centenarian served as a State Commissioner in Kano under Military Governor Audu Bako and later as Special Assistant on National Assembly Liaison to President Shehu Shagari in the Second Republic.
