United States President Donald Trump on Sunday asserted that Iran’s next supreme leader “is not going to last long” without approval from the United States, intensifying tensions over the country’s leadership succession.
Speaking to ABC News, Trump said the incoming leader “is going to have to get approval from us,” warning that failure to do so could jeopardize their tenure.
The comments came in the wake of the US-Israeli offensive that began nine days ago.
Trump suggested he should have influence over the selection of Iran’s next supreme leader following the death of Ali Khamenei, and dismissed speculation that Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba, could succeed his father.
Iran’s government responded sharply. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told NBC’s Meet the Press that only the Iranian people have the authority to elect their new leader, describing Trump’s remarks as unacceptable interference.

“We allow nobody to interfere in our domestic affairs. This is up to the Iranian people to elect their new leader,” he said, urging Trump to apologise for instigating conflict with Iran.
The clerical body responsible for appointing the next supreme leader has reportedly completed its vote and is expected to announce a decision soon.
Analysts warn that Trump’s statement could further strain relations between the United States and Iran, highlighting the ongoing contest for influence and sovereignty in the Middle East.
