Unconfirmed Casualties As US-Israeli Strikes Hit Iran’s Supreme Leader Election Building

A building in Qom housing the body responsible for selecting Iran’s next supreme leader was hit by US and Israeli airstrikes on Tuesday, March 3, according to Iranian media reports.

The Assembly of Experts had reportedly relocated its proceedings to the Qom facility after its main headquarters in Tehran was struck on Monday.

The attacks come days after former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a series of US-Israeli strikes on Saturday.

According to the Tasnim news agency, “the American-Zionist criminals attacked the Assembly of Experts building in Qom,” a city south of Tehran.

The Assembly of Experts is the constitutional body responsible for appointing, overseeing, and if necessary, removing Iran’s supreme leader.

Footage broadcast by Iranian media showed significant damage to the structure. No information was immediately available on casualties.

The Mehr news agency reported that the building was no longer in active use for meetings at the time of the strike.

Tasnim had earlier reported that the assembly’s primary headquarters in Tehran had been targeted on Monday.

Iran announced on Sunday that it had begun a transition process following confirmation of Khamenei’s death.

The transition plan involves the establishment of an interim leadership council made up of the president, the head of the judiciary, and a jurist from the Guardian Council, which vets candidates and oversees legislation.

Ali Larijani, Iran’s top security official, is also playing a key role in the process.

The interim council will govern the country while the Assembly of Experts works to appoint a permanent successor to the supreme leader.
