The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, as a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s International Workers’ Day.
The announcement was made on behalf of the government by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who also extended greetings and congratulations to Nigerian workers ahead of the celebration.
In a statement signed on Thursday, April 30, by the Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, the minister praised workers across the country for their commitment and contributions to national progress.
He stressed that the role of workers remains vital to Nigeria’s development, urging them to continue demonstrating patriotism, diligence, and productivity in their duties.

“The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this on behalf of the Federal Government. He congratulated workers across the country on this year’s celebration.
“The Minister commended Nigerian workers for their hard work and dedication to national development. He noted that their efforts are essential for the nation’s growth and prosperity,” the statement read.
Tunji-Ojo further reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing workers’ welfare, strengthening security, and creating a supportive environment for economic advancement.
He also encouraged Nigerians to observe the occasion peacefully, remain law-abiding, and use the day as an opportunity to reflect on the importance of unity, discipline, and hard work in nation-building.
