The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured five of the six chairmanship seats in the 2026 Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won one seat.
Results announced on Sunday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showed that the APC won the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abaji, Bwari, Kwali and Kuje Area Councils. The PDP emerged victorious in Gwagwalada Area Council.
Gwagwalada
In Gwagwalada Area Council, the PDP candidate, Mohammed Kasim, polled 22,165 votes to defeat the APC’s Yahaya Shehu, who secured 17,788 votes.
Declaring the result, Returning Officer Philip Akpen said Kasim, “having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”

Bwari
In Bwari Area Council, APC candidate Joshua Ishaku won with 18,466 votes.
Returning Officer Mohammed Nurudeen declared Ishaku elected after meeting the legal requirements.

Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC)
Christopher Maikalangu of the APC was re-elected in AMAC after polling 40,295 votes.
Announcing the result, AMAC Collation Officer Andrew Abue declared Maikalangu returned elected.

Abaji
In Abaji Area Council, Umar Abdullahi Abubakar of the APC won with 15,536 votes.

Kwali
APC candidate Nuhu Daniel polled 17,032 votes to defeat PDP’s Haruna Pai, who scored 8,575 votes.

In Kuje Area Council, APC’s Danjuma Shekwolo won with 17,269 votes, defeating the PDP candidate who secured 15,824 votes.

With the outcome, the APC consolidated its control of five out of the six area councils in the FCT, while the PDP maintained its hold on Gwagwalada.
