Afrobeats superstar Davido has opened up about his journey to global stardom, saying he has carved out a unique path for himself despite being born into one of Nigeria’s wealthiest families.
The award-winning singer, whose real name is David Adeleke, made the remarks during a recent interview with Vibe Magazine, where he reflected on his career, family background and rise to international prominence.
According to Davido, his story differs significantly from the popular “grass-to-grace” narrative that resonates with many Africans, as he was born into wealth but still had to establish his own identity and success.
“Africa loves the grass-to-grace story. The young boy that was poor and became rich. But not to brag, which other billionaire child do you know in the world who has made a name for himself and also made a lot of money? You can’t name one aside from me,” he said.
Davido is the son of billionaire businessman Adedeji Adeleke, whose interests span several sectors, including energy, construction and education.

His family also has strong political ties, with his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, currently serving as the governor of Osun State.
Despite growing up in affluence, Davido revealed that his decision to pursue a career in music was not initially supported by his father.
Determined to follow his passion, he continued to develop his talent and eventually gained widespread recognition following the release of his breakthrough single in 2011.
Over the years, the singer has grown into one of Africa’s most influential artistes, earning international acclaim through hit songs, sold-out concerts and collaborations with some of the world’s biggest musicians.
With a career spanning more than 15 years, Davido has become one of the leading figures responsible for taking Afrobeats to the global stage while building a successful brand independent of his family’s fortune.
