The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has expressed deep sorrow over a fatal road accident at Ilubirin inward Simpson, Lagos Island, which claimed the lives of a police officer and a scavenger.
In a statement on Wednesday, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki said preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of a Toyota Camry (MUS 885 JA) lost control while speeding, veering out of his lane and striking the two victims. Both died instantly.
Bakare-Oki noted that LASTMA personnel stationed in the area swiftly secured the scene, preventing further accidents. The driver, who reportedly attempted to flee, was apprehended and handed over to the Adeniji Adele Police Division for investigation and prosecution. The vehicle was evacuated to restore normal traffic flow.

Visiting the accident site, Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the families and communities affected, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the dangers of reckless driving. He urged motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and maintain road discipline, noting that speeding remains a leading cause of avoidable road fatalities.
The LASTMA chief reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to continuous public education on road safety and called on all road users to adopt safer driving practices.
