Makarfi, Lamido Hold Unity Talks To Rebuild PDP Ahead Of 2027

Former governors of Kaduna and Jigawa states, Ahmed Makarfi and Sule Lamido, have intensified efforts to reconcile aggrieved members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The two PDP leaders met behind closed doors on Tuesday at Makarfi’s residence in Kaduna to discuss strategies for restoring unity and strengthening the party. After the meeting, they briefed journalists, describing the engagement as part of ongoing consultations to reposition the PDP for future electoral contests.

Makarfi, a former National Caretaker Chairman and Secretary of the PDP Board of Trustees, said the meeting was consistent with years of behind-the-scenes consultations among senior party leaders. He urged members to set aside past grievances for the greater good of the party.

“This is not the time to be angry. It is time to put on our thinking caps and ensure that we come out of the situation the party is in,” Makarfi said, stressing that their engagement was driven by the collective interest of the PDP rather than personal ambition.

Lamido said he and Makarfi had regularly compared notes over the years on national issues and the state of the PDP. He highlighted insecurity, economic hardship, corruption, and threats to multi-party democracy as reasons why a strong and united PDP was necessary.

The former Jigawa governor added that ongoing discussions among party leaders aim to resolve internal disputes, including litigations, and forge a credible political front. “It is not about ego or pride. It is about national sacrifice. We must put the party and the country first,” he said.

Both leaders pledged to continue consultations with other PDP stakeholders to promote reconciliation, rebuild trust, and present a united platform capable of providing credible leadership for the country in 2027.
