A late-night crash at the busy Soka junction along the Ibadan–Lagos Expressway has left two people dead and several others injured, after a speeding truck lost control and ploughed into vehicles and pedestrians.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed that the accident occurred at about 10:10 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at one of Ibadan’s most congested entry points.
Police spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday, April 5, 2026, that the crash involved a white HOWO truck bearing registration number GEM696XE, driven by Abdullahi Bashiru.
Preliminary findings, according to the police, indicate that the driver lost control of the truck as a result of excessive speed and reckless handling, triggering a chain collision that impacted multiple vehicles and unsuspecting road users.

The force of the crash claimed two lives on the spot, while several others sustained injuries of varying severity and were taken for medical attention.
Among the vehicles badly damaged were a Toyota Venza and a BMW, underscoring the scale of the impact.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abimbola Olugbenga, expressed condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a quick recovery, describing the incident as avoidable.
Authorities said a full investigation has been launched to establish the precise sequence of events and any further culpability.
The police also renewed their call for strict compliance with traffic regulations, warning that excessive speed and negligence on major highways continue to result in preventable tragedies.
