Super Eagles Drop to 45th in FIFA Rankings, Now Sixth in Africa

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have slipped to 45th position in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings, dropping one place from their previous standing.

The new table, released on Thursday, also shows the team has fallen to sixth on the African continent.

The downward shift follows a string of mixed results in recent international fixtures.

Nigeria managed a 1–0 victory over Rwanda in a World Cup qualifier played in Uyo but settled for a draw against South Africa in Johannesburg, results that contributed to their rating points decline.

On the continental ladder, Morocco retained their dominance as Africa’s highest-ranked side, followed by Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Nigeria now trails these five nations, underlining the growing competition within African football.

Globally, Spain reclaimed the number one spot, displacing Argentina, while other notable movers included Slovakia, which climbed several places after strong performances in the UEFA Nations League.

The Super Eagles had earlier slipped from 43rd to 44th and now to 45th, raising concerns about consistency ahead of upcoming fixtures.

Nigeria’s next World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic will be closely watched, with stakeholders hoping the team can reverse the trend and improve their standing before the African Cup of Nations qualifiers resume.

The FIFA men’s ranking system evaluates national teams based on results from competitive and friendly matches, taking into account the strength of opponents and the significance of games played.
