Tension erupted on Wednesday, the 28th of January, 2026, at the Lagos State House of Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, after police officers deployed tear gas to break up a protest over demolitions in several parts of Lagos State.
The demonstration, which drew affected residents and sympathisers, was organised to press for an immediate halt to forced evictions and the destruction of homes in various communities across the state.
Witnesses reported that the firing of tear gas canisters sparked fear and confusion, sending protesters, nearby residents, traders and passersby running in different directions to escape the choking fumes.

The development led to a temporary shutdown of movement around the assembly complex, as people hurriedly sought safety amid the disorder.
At the time of this report, security personnel remained stationed in the area, while the protest had been scattered.
